Songs & Sounds of
the Anti-Rent Movement
in Upstate New York

Are you ready to hear the forgotten echoes of rebellion sing once more?

For generations, the legendary songs of Upstate New York’s Anti-Rent Movement, which vibrated through the Catskill Mountains, have remained largely silent – their passion, their purpose, and their very melodies lost to time. But that silence is about to be shattered.

This isn’t just a historical lecture; it’s an invitation to experience history unearthed. Dr. Nancy Newman has performed an extraordinary feat of historical detective work, meticulously reconstructing the lost soundtrack of this pivotal conflict. Drawing on rare broadsides, forgotten newspapers, and archival sheet music, she has not only recovered the lyrics but rejoined them to their original tunes, revealing how these songs were direct conduits to the participants’ ideals, struggles, and unyielding hope.

Don’t just read about history; come and hear it live!

  • Join us for an unforgettable afternoon as Dr. Newman shares her groundbreaking research and brings these powerful, protest-filled tunes back to life.
  • Save the date and be part of restoring the vibrant, musical legacy of the Anti-Rent Movement!
  • Dr. Nancy Newman’s new book reconstructs the Anti-Rent movement’s forgotten songs, joining historical lyrics to their tunes, revealing participants’ ideals and struggles.

The Anti-Rent War, 1845

The Anti-Rent War was centered in the Catskills and pitted farmers against the landowning elite, known as the UpRenters. Here, in the little town of Andes, in August of 1845, a community came together in solidarity to rid themselves of their feudal bonds. Tired of exploitation, tenant farmers dressed in disguises and confronted landowners. This event was seminal in the Anti-Rent Wars. Rousing support for abolishing these feudal practices, the Anti-Rent movement continued to impact state politics for years to come.

  • Exhibit featuring old photographs, letters, diaries, maps, clothing, tools, weapons, furniture, pottery, coins, jewelry, documents, artwork, and other artifacts provide firsthand accounts of this historical event.
